Cosmic Geography and Worlds in Vedic Cosmology: A Comprehensive Insight

By: Vedajyot Research Mandal — led by founder Sneha Shukla

Cosmic Geography and Worlds

The text describes the cosmic structure comprising multiple worlds and regions. At the highest level is the world of Brahma in its three stages, followed below by the world of Prajapati (the Great World), and then Mahendra's world; these five together are called Heaven (Svar).

The Structure of the Cosmos

  • In the intermediate sky are the stars.
  • On earth are the creatures.

Above Avici (the profound earthly realm) are six regions of Great Planes (Mahad-Naraka), each supported by different elements:

  • Solid matter
  • Water
  • Fire
  • Wind
  • Air
  • Darkness

These six planes are named:

  • Mahakala
  • Ambarisa
  • Raurava
  • Maharaurava
  • Kalasutra
  • Andhatamisra

In these regions, beings experience extended and challenging lives due to their karma.

The Lower Worlds

Below these are the seven lower worlds (Patala):

  • Mahatala
  • Rasatala
  • Atala
  • Sutala
  • Vitala
  • Talatala
  • Patala

The eighth world is the earth with its seven lands (Dvipa), centered by the golden mountain Sumeru.

The Mountain Sumeru

Sumeru's peaks are made of precious gems—silver, lapis lazuli, crystal, and gold—each side reflecting different colors symbolizing directions. The southern slope has the Bose-Apple tree, giving the land its name.

Surrounding Sumeru are:

  • Three blue-and-white-peaked mountains
  • Three zones to the north and south, each named and spanning thousands of yojanas.

The Land of the Bose-Apple extends a hundred thousand yojanas in all directions, surrounded by a salt sea twice its size, followed by larger lands and seven seas with waters of various substances like sugarcane juice and milk.

This entire configuration is situated in the middle of the World Egg, which itself is a tiny fragment of the primary cause, like a firefly in the sky.
