Vakra Chesta Bala refers to the strength that planets acquire during their retrograde motion. The movement of planets is a significant source of their fortitude, known as Bala. Maharishi Parashara elaborates on the maximum vitality derived from planetary movements in shlokas 21-23.

Bhava Bala Calculation

Bhava Bala (strength of houses) is calculated by deducting the longitude (spashta) of certain houses based on the sign placement of the house in question.

• For houses in the first half of:

  • Virgo, Gemini, Libra, Aquarius, or Sagittarius: Deduct the longitude of the 7th house.

• For houses in the first half of:

  • Aries, Taurus, Leo, Capricorn, or the second half of Sagittarius: Deduct the longitude of the 4th house.

• For Cancer and Scorpio: Deduct the ascendant's longitude.

• For the latter half of Capricorn and Pisces: Deduct the longitude of the 10th house.

The difference is converted into degrees and divided by 3 to obtain the Bhava Bala. If the remainder exceeds 6 signs, it is subtracted from 12 signs, converted into degrees, and divided by 3.

Adding Aspects and Strengths

To this quotient, one-fourth of the aspects of benefic planets on the house is added, and one-fourth of the aspects of challenging planets is subtracted. Notably:

• Aspects of Jupiter or Mercury contribute to the aspectual strength of the planet.
• The strength of the lord of the house is also included to get the final Bhava Bala.

Additionally:

• Houses occupied by Mercury or Jupiter gain 1 Rupa strength.
• Houses occupied by Saturn, Mars, or the Sun lose 1 Rupa strength.

Depending on the time of birth (day, evening, or night):

• Houses occupied by signs rising with head (sheershodaya) gain 15 Virupas strength.
• Houses with signs rising both head and foot (ubhayodaya) and back (pristhodaya) follow the same pattern.

Shadabala Values

The Shadabala (sixfold strength) values for planets like the Sun are as follows:

• 390, 360, 300, 420, 390, 330, and 300, which are considered their Bali (strength).
